The city of Bath, celebrated for its natural springs, Roman architecture and Austenian literary connections is not a place typically associated with beer. What then has Bath to offer to the thirsty beer enthusiast?

Like any British city, Bath is blessed with a healthy baseline of beer-drinking establishments in the form of a respectable density of public houses. The include a handful of typical chain pubs, a few tied to the local brewery, Bath Ales as well as a number of independents.

The Raven

Let's start with pubs. is located just off Milsom Street in the centre of the city. With a very homely feel, a strong selection of cask ales and homemade pies, this is a cosy place to spend a few hours. The local brewer, Bath Ales, has a number of tied pubs in the city including The which is conveniently just a few staggered steps from the Raven.

For an even more authentic experience, and not too far away, you might also pop into on Walcot Street where cask beer is served from jugs. Heading further out of town, , belies its slightly generic name, with a great selection of cask ales in an intimate but welcoming atmosphere.

For those looking for something more modern, is a bit less storied and a lot more impersonal but nonetheless serves some decent locally brewed beer. It's also one of relatively few city centre pubs with a large outdoor space.

Electric Bear

Had enough of the old fashioned pubs in the city? Head further out to West of the town and into a non-descript industrial estate and you'll find . They brew a fairly broad selection of hazy beers, stouts, a lager and occasionally sours. The venue has your typical UK brewery feel to it and there's a rotating line-up of food trucks parked up outside.

If you're looking for a wider selection of beer to drink-in or takeaway, you'll find just off Kingsmead square.
